The 50th Founding Anniversary of the Addis Ababa University Press and the 11th Addis book fair started on March 27, 2017 at Eshetu Cholle Hall of the College of Business and Economics.
Professor Tassew W/Hanna, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, noted in his opening remarks: “the AAU press has been playing key role in publishing academic materials and research publications. With respect to the development of reading habit, the press is expected to further bolster its capacity both in quality and quantity,” said the professor.
On the launching ceremony, Professor Shiferaw Bekele presented the brief history of the press under two phases: from 1967-1992 and 1995-present. He also dealt with the challenges and opportunities in its 50 years of existence.
Yacob Arsano, Director of the AAU Press, said that this year’s Addis book fair is unique as it has coincided with the golden jubilee of the AAU Press. The director went on to note that the press has been on a long journey in the past 50 years striving to build its capacity and improve its services. He also reiterated the Press’s resolve to push such capacity building efforts further down the line.
On the occasion, the AAU press recognized frequently publishing authors including Professor Bahru Zewde. It also recognized three best sellers: Universal Book Store, AAU Book Center and Yewket Book Store; along with four best performing printing press working at different capacities: Birhanena Selam, Eclipse, Art Printing Press and AAU Business Enterprise PLC.
More than 64 book sellers have participated in the exhibition that offers 20% discount on books throughout its seven days stay.
