The Addis Ababa university staff members and students provided a total of more than 2.8 million birr to victims of the garbage dump landslide that occurred on 11, March 2017 at the place commonly known as Koshe.
Each academic and administrative staff of the university offered 5% of their salary for March. The staff members contributed 2.5 million birr while students donated 318,486 birr sacrificing 3 days of their morning meal. Students who do not subscribe to the service contributed 20 birr each.
Professor Admasu Tsegaye, AAU President, handed over the cheque to Diriba Kuma, Mayor of Addis Ababa City Administration, at the Addis Ababa Municipality hall. On behalf of the AAU community, Professor Admasu expressed his condolences to the family of victims. He said the university will continue to extend its hand to any support required. He also stated that the university will continue to conduct studies in the area.
Mayor Diriba Kuma commended the University community’s benevolence in providing aid to the rehabilitation of victims. He further assured that the donations given by the AAU as well as other governmental and Non-governmental organizations will properly reach the victims.
