BA in Theater Arts

The undergraduate program in theater arts is planned to equip students with multi – faceted knowledge on the art of writing, acting and directing theater. The general Learning outcomes of the BA program in theatre arts are:

• Train theatre professionals: dramatists, actors, directors, dramatic critics and junior researchers in the field of theatre arts; and
• Train theatre and literary experts who can serve as promoters of drama and literature.
• Train theatre artists for playhouse and the mass media;

   Specific Learning outcomes

• Training translators of dramatic works;
• Preparing conferences on dramatic and literary productions;
• providing capacity building schemes to theatre professionals and amateur artists; and
• enhancing the artistic and cultural awareness of the University community in general and of the University students in particular;
• Training entertainment journalists

 Professional Profile

The theatre art professional is expected to have the following skills and responsibilities;

• Conducts research in the areas of theatre arts and electronic media dramas.
• Conduct research on traditional performing arts.
• Presents theatre production;
• Make a film in an international production industry’s requirement.
• Manage skills in theatre and film productions.
• Organizes and facilitates workshops, seminars, and festivals;
• Criticizes, analyses and reviews TV, radio, and stage dramas

Graduate Program

MA in Multimedia Theater

Nowadays, the modern world is making a paradigm shift from the traditional theatre approaches to a new trend in multimedia, participatory theatre and performance approach. This is because it was widely believed that the traditional way of studying and engaging with theatre can no longer fit the quickly moving globalized world. The new shift of studying theatre and performance will enable students and the academic environment explore the multi layers of the scholarship and come up with a new perspective and analysis of the form of theatre and performance studies. In this new paradigm, the role of universities and academic environment is quite indispensable. That is, it is recognized worldwide as one of the most powerful participatory environments for education, communication and community mobilization for new shifts in the field of theatre in general.

Cognizant of the afore-mentioned situation, many academic institutions in the world have tried to examine how theatre and the different kinds of artistic activities could effectively respond to the changing needs within theatre and media contexts. And they have started to introduce new approaches of theatre in their programs. Universities started to study the many functions of theatre beyond using the form for stage purpose.

In this graduate program, the relationship between theatre and its application in different mediums will be critically examined by creating layers of subject that approach the study of theatre and performing arts for different medium in many perspectives. This relationship which is more complicated within each other can be an academic discourse that will help students to explicate the nature and application of theatre for different medium.

Following the urge for such exercise in our school, the School of Theatre Arts has conducted consecutive meetings with the graduate program committee and revised the program in 2015. The outcome of the meetings confirms and exhibits the high demand in the area of Theatre and the use of theatre for different medium. By considering the recommendation of the university program review and consultation of the program review documents, the school decided to consider the contemporary thought of theater in a multimedia dimension and Avant guard form.

In addition to the university’s program review documents and driven by the contemporary global experience as well as the urgent national needs, the School of Theatre Arts of Addis Ababa University, therefore, has a strong desire to make maximum use of the efficacy of theatre arts in the ongoing development endeavors of Ethiopia. Therefore, the school has opened multimedia theatre and performing art-oriented and multidisciplinary Masters’ program in 2015/2016 G.C. academic year.
