The Materials Sciences Program (MSP) at Addis Ababa University is a relatively new interdisciplinary program that was launched to address the dearth of highly trained and qualified nationals in the field of Materials Science. The Program opened its doors and accepted the first batch of students in the 2007/2008 academic year.  Since Materials Science is a multidisciplinary field, itwas opened as independent academic unit by four departments (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Earth Science) from CNCS of AAU.  From the academic year (2009/2010) and as per the reform of AAU postgraduate education, the materialsscience Programhas revised its curriculum and startedoffering the modular MSc program on modules and graduate thesis. The modular MSc program consists of eight compulsory modules and two concentration modules. In addition, a graduate student is expected to undertake a graduate thesis in his/her area of concentration before graduation.  Since its opening, several postgraduate students have completed Masters of Science degree in Materials Science.

Moreover, after need assessment survey and organizing a one-day workshop about the need for Materials science in the Ethiopian job market of Materials Science graduates, the Materials Science Program has prepared a PhD in Materials Science curriculum and is now in preparation to launch thePhD curriculum. The curriculum of PhD in Materials science has been already approved by CNCS and forwarded to Sedistkillo for further approval by AAU’s senate.
