The current department head is Dr. DerejeGulilat, Assoc. professor of surgery, who graduated from the department in 1991 and also served as the Dean of school of medicine.

There are 5 specialty units and 1 sub-specialty unit within the department. The department has a total of around 71 staff members made up of 4 Professors, 9 Assoc. professors, 31 Assist. Professors and 26 lecturers distributed in the various specialty and sub-specialty units. The following are the unit departments with their respective unit heads:
