The Yellow Movement raises over 300,000 Birr from flower sale
Addis Ababa University students’ initiative, the Yellow Movement has raised 302,000 birr from flower sale on Valentine Day as part of its activities to support shorthanded female students of the university.
The organizers of the initiative handed over the raised money to the University’s gender office during the ceremony held on Tuesday evening, April 25, 2017 at Blue Moon Hotel, Bole sub city.
Apart from the 302, 000 birr given in cash, the initiative offered an additional 100, 000 birr to a female PhD student currently pursuing her study at Addis Ababa University.
According to the organizers of the initiative, the money was raised at Valentine’s Day fundraising event. The money was among others raised from sell of flowers and donations from companies and individuals.
The fund raising movement is set to provide financial assistance for female students in need of support during their stay in the AAU campus.
Speaking on the occasion Almaz Tafese, Directress of the Gender Office of the Addis Ababa University said, “The assistance female students receive from this fund will support their life specially helping them secure their sanitary needs.”
AAU staff and students, supporters of the movement, and members of the initiative attended the grant ceremony. On the ceremony, the organizers also presented certificate of recognition to the supporters of the movement.

The Yellow Movement is the Addis Ababa University students’ initiative established by a Law School lecturer and a group of students to speak up for women and girls’ rights and campaign for better protection of women from Gender Based Violence. The core activities of this initiative are among others, organizing weekly table day activism, Bi-annual blood donation event, fund raising on valentine’s days.
