The Society of Friends of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (SOFIES) offered historical materials including documents, photographs, certificates, paintings and books collected from different sources to the Addis Ababa University (AAU) Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) at Ras Mekonnen Hall on the 8^th of February 2023.

Among the donations, the first collections were documents and equipment pertaining to the ‘Edget Behibret’ students’ campaign during the Derg Regime including uniform, hat, military metal water bottle, certificates and a rich collection of photographs donated by Professor Shibru Tedla, one of the members of the campaign.

The second collection comprised of photographic equipment belonging to the famous Armenian photographer Tony Boyadjian including his tripod, case and enamelware developing dish, a portrait of the photographer and a photo he took at Jan Meda, donated by Garbis Koradjian and Ian Campbell.

The donation included more than 100 documents provided by Engineer Getachew Mahteme Sellassie collected during his working career, and books, photographs of his illustrious father Blatten Geta Mahteme Sellassie Wolde Meskel and two weighing scales in glass cases.

The other donation was a large painting of Saint Gebre Menfes Kidus by the late artist Solomon Belachew with a frame produced by St. George Gallery donated by Janny Poley along with a photo of the artist working on the painting by Ian Campbell.

Teferi Mekonnen (PhD), Deputy Director of IES at AAU said that many of the artifacts and books in the IES museum and library have been donated from Ethiopians and foreigners since the establishment of the Institute.

Dr. Teferi honored the donors and SOFIES for the donations manifested on the day and stated that the gifts will be made available for researchers as soon as possible. “The Society of Friends of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (SOFIES) has been dedicating and contributing many things to the institution since its establishment,” he added.

He finally stated that the donors were presented with certificates of appreciation, and further urged both Ethiopians and foreigners to pursue their donation of such priceless artifacts and documents to IES.
