School of law holds Panel Discussion

Addis Ababa University School of Law organized a half day panel discussion under the theme “Compensation for Human Rights Violation in Ethiopia: Legal Gaps and Implementation Challenges” during the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) day on December 10, 2018.

The panel discussion brought together legal experts, academicians and officials from courts, Attorney General, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Institution of Ombudsman, Federal Police Commission, US and Finish embassies and other relevant stakeholders and provided a platform for participants to exchange experience, best practices, challenges, and ideas related to the theme selected.

In his welcoming remarks, Dean of the College of Law and Governance Studies of the AAU, Dr. Solomon Negussie stated that Ethiopia is one of the first three African countries signed Human Right Declaration.

 During the session three research papers were presented that address the issues of compensation for human rights violation in Ethiopia. The first research paper focuses on “Reparation for human rights violations under the African Charter on human and polices rights” which was presented by Assistant professor Abdi Jibril; “ Reparation foe development related forced eviction in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was displayed by Sefanit Mekonnen Lecturer and PhD candidate, school of Law, AAU and Dr. Wondwossen Demissie School of Law  presented ‘The public apology of Dr Abiy’s, Prime Minister of FDRE, government for miscarriage of justice and potential claims of compensation: issues and challenges’.
