Colleges and Institutions of AAU Stay Celebrating the 70th Anniversary

Addis Ababa University (AAU) College of Natural Sciences: Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy (IGSSA) celebrated the 70th anniversary of the University and commemorated the late Professor Laike Mariam Asfaw at Graduate Building Hall on 19th of March 2021.

Atalay Ayele (PhD), Director of IGSSA, stated Ethiopia’s contribution to the international scientific endeavours through Addis Ababa Geophysical Observatory since its establishment in 1957. “This Institute is a national seismological, geomagnetic and geodetic observatory with primary duty of conducting permanent monitoring of the earth’s system,” he added.

After briefly narrated the long lasting history and contribution of the late Professor Laike Mariam Asfaw to AAU and to his country as a whole, Atalay noted that the Institute should continue the legacy of the Professor and always remember what he did.

Elias Lewi (PhD) on his part, praised the dedicated individuals who have played great roles in the six decades long walk and achievements of IGSSA. The late Professor Laike Mariam Asfaw was one of these proud celebrities in shaping and well functioning of the Institution, he added.

The event was marked by free remarks and opinions about Professor Laike Mariam Asfaw by his friends and colleagues including virtual reflections of partners and colleagues from overseas indicating the historical development of IGSSA and his contribution.
