Call for Application for Admission to a PhD Program in Higher Education Studies at the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
The Center for Higher Education Research and Training (CHERT) of the Institute of Educational Research (IER), Addis Ababa University (AAU) would like to announce the opening of a new PhD Program in Higher Education Studies for candidates who are interested to apply for admission in to the program.
In addition to meeting the standard of the admission requirements for Graduate Studies set by the AAU, interested applicants must have credentials that demonstrate high academic standing and a concept paper showing their research area of interest along with methodology. Applicants are also required to submit evidence of relevant academic, professional preparation as well as personal and career experiences. Accordingly, an applicant to the program is required to:
- hold a master’s degree (MA, M.Sc. MEd, MPhil, etc.) based on original research in the areas of higher education, educational sciences, curriculum, educational leadership, psychology, management, economics, natural and social sciences and other related fields from a recognized and accredited higher education institutions.
- have a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.00 at the time of completion a master’s program and a minimum of ‘good’ pass for thesis work in the MA/M.Sc., Med or MPhil program.
- pass the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) of the University and the entrance examination of the CHERT, IER. For international students, GRE or TOEFL scores may be considered when GAT results are not available. Verification of equivalence of GAT and GRE /TOEFL scores could be sought from the University Testing Center.
- produce evidence that shows minimum of two years’ of teaching and/or other relevant experience in the field of higher education, education and other related field of studies.
- complete and submit an application form together with the his/her CV.
- submit a maximum of five pages statement of purpose on area of interest describing/justifying the reasons why he/she selected to join the PhD program and a concept paper on intended research in one of the four focus areas/tracks: a) higher education curriculum and internationalization, b) teaching and learning in higher education, c) quality and quality assurance in higher education and d) university-industry linkage and technology transfer.
