Addis Ababa University Senate Approves Different Programs

The Senate (the ruling body) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) approved full professorship of scholars, the 2022/23 academic calendar and new and revised postgraduate programs curricula at Nelson Mandela Memorial Hall today, 13th of September 2022.

The Senate approved the full professorship of seven candidates, i.e. one from each Colleges of Health Sciences (CHS), Social Sciences (CSS), Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA) and four from Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS).

Based on the full professorship approval of the AAU Senate, while Dr. Girma Syoum is the one from CHS, Dr. Assefa Abegaz and Dr. Teshale Sori are from CSS and CVMA respectively. The rest four, Dr. Syoum Leta, Dr. Hassen Mamo, Dr. Feleke Zewge and Dr. Gurja Belay are from CNCS.

Information from the Senate Executive Committee (SEC) indicated that the professorship process passed through several evaluation stages focused on the activities of the candidates like effective teaching, publications, participation in AAU affairs, Community Engagement, assessors’ evaluations and the like.

The AAU registrar indicated that the University’s academic calendar of the 2022/23 academic year goes from the 3rd of November 2022 to  the 2nd of June 2023, pushed for about a month due to the University to be cleared from the 08th to the 27th of October 2022 for the National Examination of Grade 12.

Besides to the approval of professorship for seven professionals and the academic calendar of 2022/23, the Senate also accepted the recommendation of endorsement for eight new and four revised graduate programs curricula proposed by different colleges.

According to the information from the Senate, those curricula went through rigorous process of approval at different levels including the evaluation of internal and external assessors. Those new graduate programs in particular had gone though needs assessment process and validation (stakeholders’ consultative) workshops, the information added.

The approved graduate programs are the following:

  1. MSc. in Poultry Health and Management (New)
  2. PhD in Disaster Risk Management and Development (New)
  3. Sub-speciality in Colorectal Surgery Fellowship Program (New)
  4. MA in Translation (New)
  5. MA in Ethiopian Languages and Development (New)
  6. PhD in Civil Engineering (Road and Transport Engineering) (New)
  7. PhD in Industrial Management (New)
  8. PhD in International Business and Strategy (New)
  9. PhD in Water and Health (Revised)
  10. MSc. in Water and Health (Revised)
  11. PhD in Water and Resources Engineering and Management (Revised)
  12. MSc. in Water Resource Engineering and Management (Revised)

Clarifications from Professor Tassew Weldehanna, the President of AAU, Emebet Mulugeta, Academic Vice President of the University and other representatives from the registrar and the respective colleges of the University, were given for issues raised by the participants related to the professorship process, the academic calendar and the new as well as the revised postgraduate programs curricula.
