General Objective – to produce graduates who will provide the full scope of anesthesia practice (as defined by the profession) with good knowledge, clinical skills and critical thinking capabilities
- Enable students administer general anesthesia to all ages and categories of patients for a variety of surgical and medically related procedures;
- Enable students use a broad variety of techniques, anesthetic agents, adjunctive drugs and equipment in providing anesthesia care;
- Enable them acquire the necessary knowledge and skill in the management of cardiopulmonary resuscitation including neonatal resuscitation;
- Enable them understand and apply the principles of acute and chronic pain management;
- Train students to recognize and take appropriate actions with reference to complications that occur during anesthetic;
- Train students to be able to position or supervise positioning of patients to ensure optimal physiologic function and patient safety;
- Train students to be able to prevent, identify and manage anesthesia hazards, injuries, pollutions and explosions;
- Train students to make them capable of serving as resource persons for airway and ventilator management of patients;
- Train students to function effectively as members of the clinical health team and appreciate the role of other health care professionals;
- Train students to be able to organize anesthetic care and resuscitative setups wherever needed.
Admission requirements – completing preparatory and scoring the cut point for higher education as determined by the MoE.
Graduation requirement – successful completion of a four year training program with:
- A minimum CGPA and MGPA of 2.00;
- Present approved and signed log/performance book with a minimum of 200 major general anesthesia procedures with tracheal intubations;
- Complete a total of 250 ECTS course work;
- Attend 15 pediatrics &/or neonatal anesthesia;
- Attend 15 cesarean sections;
- Handle 15 emergency cases;
- Present approved and signed minimum of 50 regional blocked (caudal, epidural, spinal, plexuses, & biers block etc.);
- The student must produce thesis/senior paper;
- Student must pass Final Year Comprehensive Exam;
- Internal exam 60% (written -15%, oral & practical – 15% & Progressive assessment – 30% and
- External examination 40% (practical & oral);
- This is non-credited.
- If a student can’t pass the exam he/she will be delayed for 4-6 months and re- examined.
- Examined by group of different professionals (anesthesiologist surgeons, gyn/obs).
